Electric workboat innovation

Did you know?

Since 2022, Bakkafrost has operated Grønarók, a 100% electric catamaran workboat supporting aquaculture operations in the Faroe Islands.

Grønarók uses battery-electric propulsion and is designed for work in and around Bakkafrost’s marine farming operations.

During electric operation, the workboat produces no direct exhaust emissions from a combustion engine. This statement refers to the vessel’s operation and does not represent a claim of zero greenhouse-gas emissions across the vessel’s full lifecycle. Electricity generation, battery production, maintenance and other lifecycle impacts are outside this statement.

The workboat was developed through collaboration between Bakkafrost, MEST Shipyard, the Nordic Council of Ministers, the Faroese Government and the Faroese power company SEV.

Electric propulsion can reduce reliance on diesel-powered vessels and may also reduce noise during operation. Grønarók provides practical experience that can help inform the development of lower-emission marine operations.

Bakkafrost continues to assess technologies and operational improvements that can reduce fuel use and environmental impacts across its value chain.
