Bakkafrost releases smolt in Suðuroy

23.04.2020

In total, 2.1 million smolt will be released to the fish farming cages in the fjords of Vágur and Hov.
- We are happy that we will have fish at every site in Suðuroy again, says Oddvald Olsen, Farming Manager

These days, Bakkafrost releases smolt to the fish farming cages in the fjord of Vágur. Here, 1.1 million smolt will be released. The first smolt that was released came from the fish farm at Glyvradalur. Then, smolt from the new fish farm Strond will be released, and after that smolt from Norðtoftir and Viðareiði will be released. The size of the smolt is between 200 g and 300 g.

- To release smolt to the fish farming cages takes precise coordination between the department of freshwater farming and the department of sea farming. In addition, it is of utmost importance that the transport between the fish farms and the sites in the fjords is handled with utmost caution, Oddvald Olsen says.

If the release of smolt in Vágur goes according to the plan, then Bakkafrost will start to release 1 million smolt to the fish cages in Hov. This smolt is farmed at Strond and Viðareiði, and the size will be between 200 g and 300 g.

When the operations in Hov are finished, Bakkafrost will have fish at every site in Suðuroy.

- We are happy that we will have fish at every site in Suðuroy again. Even though we lost a huge part of the salmon in Suðuroy in the storm in February/March, the farming in Suðuroy has been a success. Thus, we still believe that we can make good results in Suðuroy, and the local community will also benefit from our operations, Oddvald Olsen says.
