We remain committed to creating and retaining value in the rural economy. We farm in some of the most remote and fragile coastal regions, and we respect the major role that salmon farming plays in these rural areas and are committed to being an active and integral part of our communities.

Our goal is to see communities prosper from our activities, and we take a holistic approach regarding value generation. We support a wide range of causes with importance and impact on the communities in which we operate, and we aim to support causes that are aligned with the UN goals for sustainable development.

We focus our investments into:

  • Education
  • Research
  • Sponsorship of national sporting organisations
  • Arts and culture

Among key investments are the 3-year research project at the University of the Faroe Islands on the impact of salmon farming on the environment and the potential impact climate change will have on Faroese aquaculture. And in September 2021, the Faroese Educational Institution “Nám” with support from Bakkafrost published a new learning platform for children in primary school which aims to increase the awareness and understanding of sustainable food systems and aquaculture.
Also, Bakkafrost has been proud sponsor of the Faroe Islands men’s national football team for several years.
In Scotland, we continue to support local communities through our Community Fund.

We take our role in the local communities very seriously, and we strive to contribute to the economies and the development of society both in the Faroe Islands and in Scotland through procurement of local services and products, and we continue to contribute to the development through our Healthy Living Fund.
